What the charm is
Rite of Passage is a unique Golden Charm (a 1×1 belt charm). Like all charms it sits in a belt charm slot, fills with charges as you kill monsters and at Wells, and triggers automatically — no button press. Its trigger is the interesting part:
- Trigger
- Used when you Kill a Rare or Unique enemy
- On use
- Possessed by a spirit for 10–20 seconds
- Charges
- Consumes all 80 charges per use
- Always
- 15% increased Rarity of Items found
- Requires
- Level 50
Because it eats all 80 charges in one go, it fires roughly once per pack — kill the Rare, get possessed, then refill charges on the trash around it before the next Rare. The possession itself is the payload: a strong, temporary combat buff plus a summoned spirit creature that fights for you while it lasts.
How to get one
Rite of Passage drops from monsters possessed by Azmerian Wisps — the glowing spirit orbs that drift through zones from the Grelwood in Act 1 onward and return in the endgame. Lure a wisp into a monster (it speeds up as you approach, slows as you back off), kill the now-empowered pack, and the charm is one of the possible rewards.
It's a chase drop, not a guaranteed one — most players buy theirs. If you'd rather trade for it, any Rite of Passage works; just check which spirit it's rolled (below) before you pay, since that's the whole point of the item.
The spirit is a rolled modifier
Each Rite of Passage is locked to one of nine Azmeri spirits (a few roll the wildcard "Random Spirit", which picks a different one each trigger and lasts the full 20 seconds). The spirit decides what the possession actually does — so two copies of the charm can play completely differently. Match the spirit to your build: defensive spirits to survive, offensive ones to nuke.

Which spirit should I want?
The quick read, by what your build needs:
- Need to survive:Bear (life + stun) or Ox (armour + ailments) — both also give flat 20% reduced damage taken.
- Want raw damage:Owl and Primate give a clean 80% increased damage; Serpent does too and converts your whole hit into poison.
- Crit / attack build:Cat — 100% increased crit chance plus speed and evasion.
- Want an element added:Stag (lightning + max res), Owl (cold), Boar (fire + bleed).
- Speed / mapping:Wolf, Cat and Stag all give +15% move and +30% skill speed; Wolf also breaks armour to amplify your hits.
There's no single best spirit — it depends entirely on your build's damage type and what it's missing. If you're unsure, an 80%-damage spirit that matches your element (or Bear/Ox for a glass-cannon that just needs to live) is the safe pick.
Put it to work
Rite of Passage rewards a build that reliably kills Rares fast and has trash nearby to recharge it. Plan the gear around it in the Planner, or read up on the systems it touches in the Codex.
