What a Waystone is
A Waystone is a map item you load into the Map Device to open an endgame zone. Its tier (up to 15, or 16 via corruption) sets the area level, and its modifiers work like an item's: prefixes mostly add reward, suffixes mostly add monster difficulty. An unrolled white Waystone is a waste — always roll it before you run it.
Which mods you want
The reward prefixes are what you're chasing:
- Increased Quantity of Items — the king stat; scales everything.
- Increased Rarity of Items — more rares/uniques in the drops.
- Increased Pack Size — more monsters = more drops.
- More Magic / Rare monsters — rares are where the good loot is.
The suffixes (extra monster damage and resistances, reduced player recovery, etc.) are the tax you pay for those rewards. They scale danger faster than reward, so take as many as you can comfortably clear — no more.
A mod that's harmless to one build can brick a map for another (e.g. "monsters reflect damage", "less recovery"). If a Waystone reads dangerous for your build, Chaos the bad mod or just run a different stone.
How to roll one
Same currency as any item, applied to the Waystone:
Transmutation + Augmentation
Early/low-tier: make the Waystone Magic and add a mod or two cheaply.
Orb of Alchemy
The standard at high tier — Alch every Waystone to a 4-mod Rare for the loot multipliers.
Chaos Orb
Reroll a bad/too-dangerous mod on a Rare Waystone (pairs well with an Omen of Whittling).
Exalted Orb
Add another mod to push quantity/rarity higher — more reward, more danger.
Vaal Orb
Gamble for a bumped tier or an extra mod. Irreversible — only on Waystones you can afford to lose.
Distilled Emotions also roll onto Waystones — Greed adds item Rarity, and three Paranoia add roughly +36% more Rare monsters. Save them for your best stones. See the Distilled Emotions guide.
Precursor Tablets — buff a whole region
Precursor Tablets slot into Atlas towers and apply their modifiers to every map in the tower's radius — increased quantity/rarity, and league mechanics like Breach, Ritual or Expedition layered onto those maps. Stack overlapping towers and the effects pile up, so a well-set-up region multiplies the loot from every Waystone you run there.
Slotting a higher-tier Waystone into the tower itself increases how many tablet modifiers apply — tablets and Waystone mods multiply together, which is where the exponential loot (and the build checks) really come from.
Don't over-juice past your clear speed — a Waystone you can't finish drops nothing and can cost you map progress. Scale rewards up as your build gets stronger.
Keep building
Roll the gear that lets you tank juiced maps in the planner, then push your Waystones and towers as far as it can carry.
