Runes — guaranteed, removable stats
A rune slots into a rune socket on a weapon or piece of armour and grants a fixed stat — no RNG. Unlike a rolled mod, a rune is removable: swap it as your build changes. That makes runes the safest way for a new player to shore up a resistance or add flat damage. This tool has all 240 socketables (166 runes plus soul cores and more) with their exact per-slot effects.

Getting sockets
Gear doesn't always come with rune sockets. Use an Artificer's Orb to add one, then drop in a rune or soul core. Martial weapons and armour can hold runes; the number of sockets is capped by the item type.
A rune's value often depends on the slot — the same rune can give a different stat on a weapon vs body armour. Check the per-slot text in the runes codex before you commit a socket.
Soul Cores — the bigger socketable
Soul Cores slot into the same sockets but carry stronger or more conditional effects (often utility and on-hit bonuses) — the step up from a basic rune once you know what your build wants.

0.5: Runeforging, Verisium & Runic Ward
The 0.5 league adds Kalguuran Runeforging. Monsters from the league's Remnants drop Verisium, a metal currency that powers it — and from Act 3, Verisium Runeforging can upgrade Kalguuran Unique armours, granting them extra properties.
Runeforging also introduces Runic Ward: a new defensive layer that acts like a secondary health bar, absorbing damage before it reaches your life or energy shield. You'll find the Verisium currencies in the currency codex.
Patch 0.5 has refined this: Runeforging no longer un-Fractures mods and now keeps any socketed jewels, and as of 0.5.3 high-level armour loses about 20% less defence for the same Runic Ward — so the trade-off is friendlier than at launch.
